do you know where your beer has been?

October 29, 2006

Interesting article on some new technology for tracking transatlantic shipments. I’m glad they’re using beer as the test case — i’ve often wondered about how long beer sits on ships on average. a lot of imports seem fine (and tend to age in the bottle well), but we arecertainlycapable of much fresher domestic product.

October 26, 2006

no longer just “black like my heart,” I will soon be able to say “red like my eyes.”

Guinness is developing a red version of it’s stout:

New Yorkers can’t hold their beer

October 23, 2006

Rocketboom covers the international brewers fest. Looks like a real good time.

Also things are looking up for hop growers.

I just did a feature for In The Pink Texas, and should resume with some more style tastings shortly (I am working out some back end issues and will be migrating over to self-hosted blog within a couple of weeks).

Perpetual Motion?

October 12, 2006

Realbeer.com’s Beer Therapy reports that Sierra Nevada has figured out a way to harness more energy from it’s own emissions.

Reminds me of the Alaskan brewers who were managing to sell excess CO2 back to their community.

Lesson II-2 California Common Beer

October 12, 2006

The California Common Beer is the style name for what we tend to tthink of as the steam beer. It is one of two indigenous American styles of beer and dates back to the 19th century. It is basically a beer made with lager yeast at ale temperatures, which creates very interesting dynamics in the aroma and flavor.

Anchor Steam is brewed in San Francisco, where the temperature is always perfect for beer making. In addition to the cool ale/lager synergy the open fermentation takes place in rather shallow tanks that on the tour you can get remarkably close to.

Further proof that god loves us

October 11, 2006

This is an interesting study on the possible health benefits of drinking beer in moderation. Of course I have been saying this for years, but it’s nice to see people are still trying to prove it out.
